LIFE FOR MAN, DEATH FOR THE PLANET
Prov. 11:3/Isa. 24:4-6

He is a present day contemporary man who lives in a modern city. Each morning he gets up at exactly 6:00 a.m. and has his breakfast, consisting of orange juice, cold cereal and milk, all of which he pours from plastic containers. He then gets into his car and drives to his office.

Since it's a warm day, he turns on the air conditioner. He spends the mornings in staff meetings, and after a hasty lunch, brought from home also in plastic containers, he sits at his computer filling out reports.

When he returns home, he leans back in his comfortable plastic foam-cushioned chair, also covered in a synthetic fabric, and meditates, not on his work schedule, but on what man is doing to his real home, planet earth.

Dr. Lavern Dumont, a researcher at the University of Paris, France, gave this simple illustration. Here are some of his observations.

"Present day man", he says, "has a comfortable life style with many amenities, some of which are necessary, but this man, along with others like him, is gradually decimating planet earth. Everything that he uses gives off fluorocarbons, and these destroy the earth's protective ozone layer.

Some people attempt to be very responsible and think about the future of planet earth. They use paper bags instead of plastic ones, they carpool, and they teach their children from a young age to be responsible with our resources and recycle. Some even use solar energy.

Even without a scientific background, one can realize to some degree that we all share in the devastation of our planet. Sadly the very same people that are so concerned with the preservation of earth, are involved with other elements that destroy the inner being and which have eternal consequences.

Some turn to drugs or alcohol for some instant gratification, while others become directly responsible parties of a dishonest business deal, the defrauding of a friend's confidence, the destruction of a home through an illicit love affair, a quick abortion, and the list goes on.

It's contradictory to be concerned over excess fluorocarbons in the air when, in fact, we care little about the excess moral fluorocarbons in our heart. While it's important that we protect our habitation, it's much more important that we protect the spiritual welfare of our own soul.
